Addiction and Dependency

Addiction and dependency can overlap, but each has different symptoms.

Addiction changes the chemistry in the brain, causing intense urges and impulses. Attempts to ease these impulses often reults in continued use, despite the risks and dangers to oneself or others. This type of use often leads to dependence.

Dependence occurs when a person develops tolerance of the substance. The best strategy is to slowly taper off the use of the substance, gradually reducing the level of use until abstinence is achieved. This will also minimise withdrawal symptoms.

Are you or a loved one experiencing any of the following:

  • Using the substance beyond the time-frame you intended to use

  • Wishing that you could reduce your use but are struggling to do so

  • Spending a considerable amount of time sourcing, preparing, and taking the substance

  • Experiencing intense urges to use the substance

  • Interpersonal relationships becoming strained

  • Struggling to focus on important tasks and responsibilities

  •  Substance addiction taking time away from family, friends, work, school, and home responsibilities

  • Reduced or halted participation in hobbies, interests and social and family events

  • Continuing to use, despite risky circumstances

  • Continuing to use despite a decline in one’s physical and psychological welfare

  • Building an increased tolerance to the substance and requiring larger amounts to achieve the desired effect

  • Experiencing unpleasant physical and psychological side effects such as nausea, vomiting, sweating, shaking, diarrhoea, and lethargy
